As a mother and occupational therapist, I’ve always been interested in children’s ergonomics and how little attention we give it.
If it’s important how adults sit, why wouldn’t it be the same for our children?
And to be honest, it’s not that difficult to set your child up with an ergonomic workstation.
Apart from a comfortable ergonomic chair, a kid’s adjustable desk are probably the two most important factors.
Below you will find my recommended lists of kid’s desks, and also some chair and desk sets.
Best Kids Adjustable Desk
Mount-It! Height Adjustable Kids Desk
- Height-adjustable chair and desktop
- Solid steel frame
- Desktop tilts to 40°
- For children 3-6 years old
The Mount-It! Kids Desk was designed with ventilation holes in its seat and the backrest to provide plenty of airflow to your child while they’re being creative.
The desktop platform is 14.5’’ x 26.5’’ and can be lifted up to 40° to enable better posture for reading, writing, and drawing.
Adjustability
Both the seat and the desktop are adjustable for height. The seat can be raised from 12.6’’ to 17.3’’ off the floor, and the desktop raises from 21.5’’ to 30’’ off the floor.
This will give you 9’’ of wiggle room to adjust as your child grows. But to make the best use of this set, your little one needs to be in the range of 3’9’’ and 5’ tall.

The child will also get a stand-up organizer on the desktop to keep some books and materials handy. The surface of the desktop is pretty generous and measures 35.8’’ x 18.3’’.
Although the description states this product was made for children ages 3-9, judging by the user’s experience, it is actually best for children between the ages of 3 and 7-years-old.

The Little Soleil Desk Set definitely caught our eye due to its quality, adjustability, and comfort.
This is a set that grows with your child by having a height-adjustable function on both the chair and the desk. The desk can be raised from 21’’ to 31’’ off the floor with the help of individual leg levers.
The entire desktop area is rounded and features rubber bumpers for safety.
A part of the desktop can be tilted up to 74° which is a great idea, but it needs some stoppers that would prevent things from sliding down.

We love how much storage this desk offers with its molded cubbies on both sides and the shelf above the desktop. The kids will also make use of the molded grooves around the whiteboard.
An interesting addition to this art desk is the built-in light switch that we hoped would shine some light on those projects, but it’s actually kind of dim and doesn’t do much.

Other Recommended Desks
Melissa & Doug Wooden Round Table
This is an interesting looking desk and chair set with a desktop surface made of wood. Both the chair and the desk are height adjustable and the desk can be lifted with the help of a knob.
The chair is pretty standard, there’s no cushion to it but it does come with a backrest. The desktop surface is 31’’ wide and 19.6’’ deep but almost a 3rd of the depth space is taken by the shelves.
Artist Hand Kids Study Desk
The Artist Hands Desk & Chair Set is lightweight and can be moved around with ease. Both the desk and the chair are height adjustable, and you can also adjust the height of the backrest.
The chair can be lifted from 11.8’’ to 17.72’’ off the floor and the desktop can be raised from 21.26’’ to 29.92’’. The desktop surface tilts to 40°, there’s some storage underneath it and a book holder on top.
Together with the desk, you get an LED lamp that you can rotate to 360° and choose between 3 levels of dimming. This set is recommended for children ages 3-12.
Overall it is a sturdy set that features a wooden desktop surface, has enough room for storage, and a light that performs well. Assembly is also easy for this one.
Baby Joy Kids Desk & Chair Set
We have to say we were hyped with the Baby Joy Desk & Chair Set. Unlike the brand name suggests, this desk can be used by children ages 3-14 and will successfully hold a laptop.
Both the desk and the chair are height adjustable, and the chair also features a unique butterfly backrest that keeps the pressure off the spine.
The desktop lifts from 21’’ to 28’’ and the chair can be raised from 12.5’’ to 18.5’’. The frame of the desk is pretty sturdy due to its H-shaped design.
Child Ergonomics
The earlier we introduce our children to ergonomics the better chance they have of developing a healthy spine.
This is why we’ve included additional information in our children’s desks review to explain proper sitting habits and other things to consider when buying a desk for them.
How to sit
Start with the feet – when your child sits down, their feet should be flat on the floor.
Take a look at your child’s knees. If there’s 2’’ space between the back of the knees and the seat they’re doing fine.
When they face the desk their hips, knees and ankles should all be positioned at 90 degrees.
Posture
Choosing an ergonomic chair is of the utmost importance when it comes to your child’s health. Building proper posture habits from an early age can really make a difference later on.
Make sure your child’s back is supported by the backrest when they’re drawing. Also, the chair should be kept in an upright position. Be sure to leave some space in front of your child.
To see if there’s enough space, tell your child to bend slightly forward while they’re sitting in front of the desk.
Desk height
To measure the proper desk height for your child, tell them to sit down and measure 2’’ above their elbow.
Since children grow fast it is a smart move to invest in a height-adjustable desk and chair to follow their growth without purchasing new sets regularly.
Things To Consider
Your child’s age
When shopping for your child’s workspace online, pay attention to the recommended age limit.
Most parents start with an art center as early as 2 years old. If you’re getting something for a toddler or kindergartener make sure the desk is easy to clean and maintain.
At that age, it might be smart to get rounded objects with easy to open drawers that won’t pinch their fingers.
Once your child is a bit older they will need a desk to hold their laptop and other essentials. In that case, get a sharp desk that can hold heavier objects and will have a proper desktop surface.
Your child’s height
If you’re looking for the perfect desk & chair for your child we have to tell you that one size does not fit all.
Even if the manufacturer recommends a certain age, not all children are the same body type at that age. This is why it’s important to check out the measurements of the set before buying it.
If you already have the right sized chair at home, measure the distance from the seat to the floor, and compare that to the chair you’ll be buying.
Some manufacturers like Apex inform you of the height range of their adjustable desk & chair. We made sure to include all that important information in our children’s desk review.
Space
Before buying a desk for your child you’ll have to consider the available space you’ve got at home. Some desks are designed to save space and turn any corner into a study space.
Even if you don’t lack space you’ll still want something with drawers and cubbies to organize your child’s things. The best thing to do would be to ask your child what kind of setup they would prefer.
Storage
Most of the desks for children come with some sort of storage space whether it is cotton bags, cubbies, drawers, etc.
This is a good way for your child to start learning about putting everything back in its place. Plus, the more storage space they get the cleaner their room will be.
