How We Tested
As a professional masseuse, you probably have a fair idea on what’s important when purchasing a reliable massage table. But to be clear, I will break down my process for testing each table.
Comfort and padding
To ensure the best client experience, always go for thicker padding. My personal recommendation would be to get a memory foam mattress if possible. They are a better investment because they tend to last longer.
Material
Leather is always the best choice because it smells better and lasts longer. In regards to leather maintenance, you will need to be careful and use leather balms to keep it fresh and increase its longevity. The downside to leather is the price, but if you are a professional it should be worth it in the end.
Mobility
Massage tables for salons tend to be larger and heavier. If you plan on travelling for house visits a lighter table would suit you better. Some models are very easy to fold and unfold so makes sure you choose these to save some time and effort.
My personal recommendation would be to choose models that can be carried around with a handle. Also make sure you get a strong massage table that can hold a lot of weight.
Table features
Some tables are shorter, while others a re longer and come with extensions like a headrest and armrests. These can be helpful if they were designed correctly. They can provide more comfort for the client but they will take time to adjust for each client.
Some massage tables are motorized and can be adjusted with the touch of the button. This looks really fancy to the client and is sure to draw their attention.

Common Buyer's Questions
How much should a massage table cost?
Depending on its quality and extra features a massage table can cost anywhere between $80 and $800 or even more. Beware of most low-cost massage tables as they are usually not of a good enough quality although there are some decent exceptions. Also, make sure that you’re not overpaying for unnecessary features and weight capacity.
What’s the average size of a table?
The standard dimensions of a table are 73” length x 31” width x 24”-34” adjustable height. 73” is not long enough for some clients, however, so you might want to look for 84” long tables. Also keep in mind that even the maximum 34” height of most tables is not actually that tall.
What’s the weight limit for a portable massage table?
The standard weight limit of a portable table is 450 pounds although the practical recommended limit of such tables is ~350 pounds. There are some sturdier tables that have a higher capacity of 750 pounds or more.
Can a portable massage table be used for Reiki?
Yes. Depending on its design it can be more or less comfortable for Reiki practice but most portable tables can do the job.
Massage Table Features
Massage tables have several defining features that are key for their performance, comfort, and longevity. Some of them leave room for subjectivity but they all need to be of high quality to be worth it.
Dimensions
Balancing the dimensions of a portable massage table can be tricky because it needs to be big enough to comfortably lie down on while remaining easy to fold and transport.
Most portable tables have a length of 73” although some can be longer and reach 84”.
The width is usually around 30”-35” while the height is typically adjustable between 24”-34”. Keep in mind that even 34” can be short for taller people.
Weight capacity
Depending on your clients’ weight you might need a massage table with a higher weight limit. Most tables have a listed limit of around 450lbs but are best used for people of up to 350lbs.
Some higher-quality tables can carry a weight of up to 750 or even 1000lbs. While that’s a great benefit, consider if you actually need the table to be that strong.
Cable system
There are different types of cable systems with Cradle Lock Cable System, Shiatsu Release, and Reiki Cable System being the most popular variants.
Cradle lock is great for portable tables because the cables remain connected while opening and folding the table. Shiatsu release allows for the table to be placed firmly on the ground.
Headrest
Most massage tables come with their own designs of headrests. A headrest needs to be comfortable to lie on, be well-attached to the table, and be adjustable. It’s also great if it’s detachable.
Massage table foam
Density and thickness are the two main aspects of table foams to look into. Thickness refers to how thick the foam layer is with 2” being the average among most tables.
Density refers to how soft or dense the foam is. Softer (memory) foams are more comfortable to lie on but get deformed easily after continuous use while denser foams are less pleasant to lie on. Medium-density foams are usually preferred.
Massage table endplates
The endplates of a massage table are what keeps it stable and prevents any shaking.
- Standard endplates are mounted at about knee-level between the legs of the table. This gives them extra stability but is uncomfortable if you want to perform some massages that require you to knee underneath the table.
- Reiki endplates form a reverse U-shape under the table and between its legs. This allows the masseuse to knee more comfortably but it decreases the overall stability of the table.
- Low endplates are less popular but very effective. They are situated at ankle level between the legs of the table. This gives them great stability while also allows you to knee comfortably for most types of massages and procedures.
High / Low endplates is a combination of Low endplates and Reiki endplates that is gaining popularity as it combines the benefits of both types.
