The 10 Best Ergonomic Power Lift Chairs For The Elderly

Being unable to move freely can rob us of our confidence and independence.

That’s typically what my elderly patients confide in me. They also worry about burdening their loved ones.

So whether you’re coming back from rehab or just dealing with the frailties of old age, chances are you’ll be sitting quite a bit.

In this case, I strongly recommend investing in an ergonomic power lift recliner chair.

Here is my list of recommended power life chairs that tick the box in areas of build quality, ergonomics, safety, and very comfortable.

Ashley Yandel Power Lift Oversized Recliner Saddle

Ashley Yandel Power Lift Oversized Recliner Saddle

  • Power lift and tilt feature.
  • Recline or elevate your legs separately.
  • Adjustable with hand-controlled remote.
  • A capacity of 300 lbs.

The Ashley recliner will allow you to recline or elevate your legs with the push of a button.

Those two actions can be done separately, but in order to get up, you’ll need to lower your legs first and then elevate your torso.

All the movements are powered by a dual motor and controlled with the touch of a button.

Design & Size

The design of the recliner is contemporary with a worn-out leather look.

The fabric is not leather though, it is made of polyester fiber which is known to be very resilient and durable. It is also easy to maintain with a wet wipe.

This power chair will hold people up to 300 lbs. The seat measures 19’’ so if you’ve got wide hips, keep this in mind.

Your recliner comes with instructions, hardware, and tools for assembly.

It will fit through doorways that are at least 30’’ wide. The assembly is pretty straightforward and it should take you 20 minutes to get your Ashley up and running.

The company behind the product charges $11 for a 5-year warranty which most people consider fair.

What customers are saying

The Ashley chair is loved by a variety of people. Some prefer comfortable lounging with the push of a button, others have certain mobility needs and find the powered chair extremely helpful.

Both groups agree that the Ashley chair is extremely comfortable, and seems to be very well constructed.

It doesn’t sink in like a mattress and keeps you feeling truly supported.

The two motors are very quiet and will not disturb the people around you. The fabric feels nicer than leather and the color is flattering.

Most people that got this chair felt like it was a great bargain. The only downside is the standard seating space that would be tight for people with wider hips.

What we like

  • Good quality product.
  • Comfortable and supportive.
  • Medium-ranged price.

What we don’t like

  • The seat might be tight for some people.

Mega Motion Easy Comfort Heavy Duty Big Lift Chair

Mega Motion Easy Comfort Heavy Duty Big Lift Chair

  • Electric lift.
  • 3 positions option.
  • Adjustable.
  • 500 lbs of weight capacity.

The Mega Motion chair was made for heavier people that need assistance getting up.

The chair can be switched between: lifted for easier getting up, close up like a standard chair, or fully reclined.

However, you are not tied to these positions and can choose a mid-level as you continue to adjust your desired position.

The footrest motion is connected to the recliner so the more you lower your head the more your feet go up.

Design & Size

The Mega Motion was made with a hardwood and plywood mix and a polyester knit fabric. This is similar to the Ashley chair, but since this one is knitted it will be far more durable.

Also, the seating size is superior compared to Ashley’s 19’’, giving you a total of 27’’ of comfort.

The warranty comes included in the price and you get 1 year for electronic parts and a life-time warranty for the lift mechanism.

What customers are saying

Customers that got this chair are truly enjoying how comfortable it is. The width and depth of the seat is a large size, and perfect for anyone to use.

People with lower back problems find this chair extremely useful. The motor is quiet and easy to operate.

The Mega Motion is a sturdy chair that is of great quality and most people that buy it will agree to that fact.

The only problem is deciding to cash out a bit more finance for this one.

What we like

  • Large size that fits all.
  • High weight capacity.
  • Sturdy and durable.
  • Easy to operate.

What we don’t like

  • High price range.

Irene House Dual Motor Power Lift Recliner Chair

Irene House Dual Motor Power Lift Recliner Chair

  • Foot and backrest adjusted independently.
  • It can be reclined flat.
  • Premium faux leather cover.
  • Weight capacity of 300 lbs.

The Irene chair will be ideal for the elderly people that need comfort and support. The frame of the chair is made of solid wood and the fabric is soft faux leather.

Aside from the superior fabric and frame, this chair comes with a dual-motor system.

One motor raises and lowers the footrest and the other reclines the backrest separately.

You also get the option for assisted standing up which will be very helpful for the elderly or people that have come out of surgery.

The other great option is reclining until the chair is completely flat, so you can use it for sleeping as well.

What customers are saying

Most of the customers get this chair for the elderly and it has proven to be a life-saver. It is well constructed and works flawlessly.

It will accommodate medium-sized people and the seat width comes up to 22’’.

The Irene chair is filled with medium density foam making it comfortable and supportive at the same time.

Some people say it is more comfortable than their bed.

The company offers great customer service as well, so whatever happens with your order you won’t be left hanging.

The only thing some people didn’t like was that the footrest doesn’t lift up as high as needed so they usually use a pillow to solve this issue.

What we like

  • Great for elderly support.
  • Works flawlessly.
  • Good quality construction.

What we don’t like

  • The footrest tends to stay lower than needed.

Mcombo Electric Power Lift Recliner Sofa

Mcombo Electric Power Lift Recliner Sofa

  • Massage and heating function.
  • Anti-tipping mechanism.
  • Remote-controlled movements.
  • Weight capacity 320 lbs.

The Mcombo lift sofa works with a TUV certified motor that helps you stand up, or recline in your desired position.

Unlike the Irene chair that could be laid out flat, the Mcombo only reclines to an angle of 140 degrees. The entire operation is done by pressing 2 buttons on a remote.

Design & Extras

Just like our previous items, this chair was made of faux leather that feels soft and is easy to clean.

The big difference on this chair is the massaging & heating function that will do wonders for your feeling of comfort.

The massaging vibrations are situated in 8 different spots, and the heating source is around the waist. You can choose between 5 levels of heat.

You also get 2 cup holders on both sides, some side pockets to store your essentials, and dual USB outlets to charge your cell phone or tablet.

The manufacturer offers a 30-day return policy; you’ll only need to disassemble the product if you wish to return it. Otherwise, you get 1 year of warranty for the lift mechanism, frame, and electronic parts.

What customers are saying

The Mcombo chair is a very good product for the price.

The seat is soft and comfortable, and the heating option is an added bonus to the whole experience.

This is an especially great option for people that feel cold all the time.

People with bad knees will also appreciate the lift option since it is a breeze to get up off the chair.

The massage option is great to stimulate blood flow and will suit anyone. This chair used to recline only to 130 degrees but the manufacturer fixed it to 140 degrees with their last update.

The seat is a bit narrower than most people expect at 17.7’’ between arms, so have that in mind.

What we like

  • Heat & Massage option.
  • Lift & Recline option.
  • Comfortable and practical.

What we don’t like

  • Narrow seat width.

People in need of a large heavy-duty lift chair should definitely check out the Mega Motion Easy chair. Just like the previous models on our list, this chair will allow you to recline or lift up with ease.

The major difference is that this chair holds the biggest capacity of weight paired with a quiet single motor.

The Mega Motion Easy is great for lounging and watching TV. It was made to accommodate larger users that need all the extra space they can get.

What customers are saying

The Mega Motion Easy Comfort will not win any design awards anytime soon, but it definitely does the trick if you’re looking for a comfy oversized recliner/lift chair.

The headrest might pose a problem for some people because it is fully stuffed and keeps your head lowered a bit when sitting upright.

This chair may be comfy for watching TV and lounging but it does very little in regards to proper spinal and lower back support so it can’t be used all day. Adding a small back pillow has helped alleviate that issue.

What we like

  • Large size.
  • Large weight capacity.
  • Effortless recline/lift functions.

What we don’t like

  • Lack of spinal support.
  • Overstuffed headrest.

People who are old in age

Anyone that needs help getting up or sitting down would benefit greatly from a lift chair. Judging by user experience, the elderly benefit the most from these types of chairs.

Only when our joints become fragile do we realize how much we’ve been taking independent actions (like sitting down or standing up) for granted.

People who have been injured

The lift chair can also assist people suffering from any kind of injury on their extremities or people that have come out of surgery and have limited movement abilities.

Since there are no manual movements and everything is motorized you don’t risk agitating your injury in any way.

Being able to get up or sit down without anyone’s assistance brings a certain sense of freedom to the users and to their close ones as well.

People who desire an extra level of comfort

Finally, we all need to have our very own relaxing spot where we can simply doze off or lounge in. So this will definitely work even for people that desire an extra level of comfort – on a daily level.

Medicare does not cover the full price of a lift chair.

However, Medicare part B or Medicare part C could recognize the cost of the lift mechanism as durable medical equipment (DME) as long as your doctor decides that it is medically necessary because it will help your condition.

Medicare part B will cover around $300 for your lift chair if you fulfill the following standards which show the doctors that you have a medical necessity:

  • You suffer from severe arthritis in your hips or knees.
  • You are confined to a bed or a regular chair.
  • You are unable to stand up on your own from a standard armchair.
  • The assistance of the lift chair should be limited to getting you up, after that, you should be able to walk with a cane or a walker.
  • You should be able to operate the lift chair yourself with the remote.

One of the biggest benefits of the lift chair is the freedom to get up and sit down on your own.

This kind of a need happens after an injury, a surgery or it could be connected with painful joints, weight problems, arthritis or simply old age.

In any of these cases, the family of the user can also relax knowing their loved ones are a bit more independent functioning on their own.

The recliner also does wonders for people. Aside from helping you relax by choosing your perfect spot, reclining your body and elevating your feet helps reduce swelling, increases blood flow and helps you get some decent resting time.

The size of the person

One of the most repeated complaints from buyers stems from choosing the incorrect sizing of a chair. Some chairs have slimmer seats which wouldn’t feel right if you have wider hips.

People that need bigger sized chairs should go for higher weight capacity.

Some seats are extra wide and could accommodate a child or a pet in the seat with you.

Comfort level

This is a tricky one as different people have different needs. Make sure you understand why you’re getting the lift chair.

If you’re interested in pure lounging or watching TV you would get a softer seat. If you need the extra support you might wish to go with a medium-firm one.

Reclining levels

When it comes to lift chairs, there are many different levels of reclining to choose from. Since they are motor-powered it will be a breeze to find your perfect spot.

Two-position chairs

With two-position chairs you can choose to sit up straight or recline. It is a standard feature that most arm-chairs offer anyway.

Three-position chairs

Aside from being able to recline and sit straight, with 3 position chairs you also get the helpful lift upwards that has been a life-saver for people that need assistance to get up or sit down.

This motion is also motorized so you literally have to move one finger – to push the button on the remote.

Infinite position reclining chairs

The infinite position chair gives you the option to sleep on it. The Irene chair on our list has that function, so you can recline, sit up, or lay down completely.

This is especially useful if you need to lie down for longer periods of time, or you’ve got swelling in your limbs that need to go away.

Heat & massage options

Most of the standard lift chairs do not come with massage and heat options, but the ones that do are usually favorites among customers.

Both heating and massage will boost your blood flow and help bring more oxygen to affected areas, supporting the healing process.

Material

While leather and vinyl will always remain a classic, there are other available options on the market such as soft faux leather, different kinds of fabrics or a mix of both.

People choose the material based on their needs; if you plan on snacking or drinking while using your lift chair, or even sharing it with a pet – choose a material that cleans easily such as faux leather.

Durability

If you’ve had a chance to browse for lift chairs, then you know it is an investment that can set you off a few hundred bucks.

This is why it is crucial to choose a durable product that will not break after 2 months of use.

Make sure to check our list with some of the best ergonomic lift chairs available.

Warranty

With regards to warranty, we’ve come to realize it is extremely important to have one.

Some manufacturers include a 1-year warranty for their electronics and lift mechanism; others require you to throw in extra cash and stay covered for 5 years.

Whichever you choose make sure you do have one, since everything happens even before you receive your product.

It can be shipped with a faulty motor or something else. Having a good quality customer service plays a major role in these instances.

Piedle Electric Power Lift Recliner Chair

The Piedle Electric chair seems like a good package that includes the standard lift/recline options, plus you get a heat and massage option. The chair is not as user friendly as the other models.

The control buttons for lift and recline are on the side of the chair, and the remote works for heating and massage.

This would make it a bit more challenging for certain people to access the control buttons.

Other than that this chair has an executive look and could absolutely be used in an office. The Piedle comes with extra support and adjustability.

You get a fully padded headrest, overstuffed backrest, and an adjustable footrest.

The cover is made of faux leather that is easy to clean up, and you also get some side pockets and a USB charging port.

Ashley Ernestine Power Lift Recliner

At first glance, the Ernestine power lift recliner looks like a huge comfy pillow with armrests. Most of the people that tried it say they’ve loved the chair since the day they got it.

It is not heavily priced, and the lift option is a lot better than most other models on the market.

Most people have an issue with their chair pushing them over and out, but this one lets you simply step forward once you’re lifted.

The Ernestine is covered in a tough fabric that is durable and doesn’t irritate the skin. And just like most other lift chairs, you get a remote to control its movements.

CANMOV Power Lift Recliner Chair for Elderly

The CANMOV Power lift features an overstuffed design similar to the Ernestine.

The seat and armrests kind of flow into each other and offer a more comfortable seating option, but fail to provide enough support for your arms.

The chair is powered by a 2 button remote that moves you from a reclined position to a lift-up position or anything in between.

The cover of the chair is made of a microfiber material that is super comfy, durable, and should last you a long time.

Homall Electric Power Lift Recliner Chair

The Homall electric chair was made for smaller sized customers. The footrest would be small for anyone over 5’6’’ tall so keep that in mind.

The chair was made with good ideas in mind: it’s a smaller, easier to handle design, without the overstuffing of the backrest. You even get a massage option.

In reality, most people that got this chair have had certain issues with the motor not running properly or breaking down fast, the wires snapping in half (although this happens in assembly if you pass the wire through the top of the wooden frame), and the lift mechanism sinking.

It seems like the makers of this product need to go back to the drawing board.

Bonzy Home Fabric Power Lift Recliner Chair

The Bonzy brand is relatively new on the marketplace but also gaining attention fast.

People that get this product are usually very happy with their purchase and feel like they’ve gotten more for their buck.

This is not a huge chair like others on our list, so you won’t need a lot of space for it.

The assembly is the easiest on our list since it arrives as 2 pieces that need to be put together.

The delivery of the package has been a bit of a wreck, thanks to FedEx, but once you start using it you forget about them.

It is comfortable, easy to operate and easy to clean. Also, the side pockets are helpful, especially for people that misplace their phones or remotes.

Customers recommend it highly for elderly people, knee, hip and back surgery patients.

The Bonzy doesn’t recline fully but it’s so comfortable that people still end up sleeping in it.
